The game is based on previous modifications for other games created by Brendan Greene under the pseudonym "PlayerUnknown", the concept of which was inspired by the Japanese film "Battle Royale" in 2000. This ultimately led to the creation of a standalone game, where Green acted as the lead game designer. The game has up to 100 players who parachute onto the island, after which they look for equipment and weapons to kill other participants and at the same time stay alive. The available safe area on the in-game map begins to shrink over time, making the available space tighter to push players against each other. The last surviving player or team wins the round.
PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds was released on Steam Early Access on March 23, 2017 for the Windows operating system. In the first seven months after release, the game sold over 13 million copies and peaked at over 2 million by the end of the year, making it one of the most played games on Steam. PUBG sold over 18 million copies on October 31st. The full game was released on December 21, 2017. The release for Xbox One under the publishing house Microsoft Studios took place on December 12 under the early access program, but on September 4, 2018 the official release took place. On March 19, 2018, the mobile version of PUBG Mobile was released for Android and iOS under the free-to-play model. The PlayStation 4 version was announced in November 2018, and released on December 7, 2018.
